First off, I just want to point out that this ocarina sounds amazing. It is in tune and very satisfying to play. You can not go wrong with the DIY as your first ocarina- it is the best you can get for the price, hands down. It only has one problem: it is unglazed except for the mouth piece. I did not paint mine, and after playing it for an hour or two a day for 3 weeks it has become quite dirty. I always washed my hands before playing, but the oils from my hands (my hands are always fairly dry) have seeped into the unglazed clay causing yellowish stains around the holes. A thin layer of blue lint is stuck to the instrument in some places and there is a subtle 'sticky' feeling where my right pinkie finger goes. It doesn't affect the sound or my playing and these problems might not be as noticeable if I had painted the ocarina, but I'm sure they would still appear. All told, if you are looking for a budget ocarina that is in tune and easy to play, and you don't mind if your ocarina looks a bit dirty, the DIY is absolutely the right choice for you. However, if you can't stand your instrument looking dirty and stained, you should consider buying a fully glazed ocarina instead.M
This was my very first 12-hole ocarina. I bought it about a year ago now and am very happy with it. It has a very rich sound, and the lowest notes on this piece are particularly satisfying. If you have never had a tenor ocarina before let me tell ya, they are heavy. I have somewhat smaller wrists so longer practice sessions with this thing were difficult at first. Eventually you should get used to the weight. Even though there are no apparent ergonomics behind this piece, I found that it was fairly easy to become familiar with it. The higher notes are not as impressive as the lower ones, but they certainly get the job done. They do not send you much paint to go along with this and there was no glazing material to speak of. After a while I got tired of seeing it getting marked up, so I went and got some cheap latex paints and a little bottle of glazing material called "mod podge" from Michaels. I would recommend this to anyone given their wrists are up to the challenge. Though I think the gorgeous low notes that come out of this thing are worth it.
