The low notes have a slight chiff and the high notes are a little airy. It takes a little getting used to with the weight and placement of the holes- my only issue is playing notes such as the low A and using sub holes- because of the design they’re harder to cover with your fingers. Other than that, it’s brilliant. Wish the ceramic was glazed though.Y
I am in my 50s, and looking down the road to retirement in 15 years. My wife and I wanted to learn an instrument that we could possibly play into our retirement years. Ocarina's seems to fit the bill, and she's a Zelda fan.
We've only practice about 15 minutes a day, but even in that short time we are learning the notes, our fingering is getting better, and yesterday we were even in harmony! I'd recommend this ocarina, and STL ocarina's in general.
Some challenges I am facing with it (as someone without any experience or musical background)
* the right hand holes are small and I have to work to make sure my fingers come down on top of them. That should become muscle memory over time.
* originally mine sounded very high pitched compare to the training video we use, where the instructor also has a Phoenix. I finally realized I need to use much less breath, and now it sounds much better. At least I'm close to the correct pitch.
This has been a fun instrument so far, and relatively easy to start with. I can see that in the future complicated fingering is going to be difficult, but wait a year and I'll be playing Country Roads like an expert!
In summary: buy it.K
I'm very happy with my purchase! My biggest concern in getting an ocarina was getting an instrument that I could achieve good tone and tuning on and STL delivered! As some have said, the raised detailing makes it a bit more awkward to cover the two smallest holes in order to play the lowest notes. However, that's just something to be aware of and not an issue that is impeding with my playing. The shipping was also quick. I chose the DHL International Standard and it came to me in Canada (Toronto) in 2 weeks. Overall happy and excited to continue learning with my new gem!E
Awesome. Thank u very much. I dropped it n the mouth piece is chipped now :/ but it still works
